Presentation

The Research Council of Norway (RCN) is the national funding agency for research and experimental development (R&D) and R&D-supported innovation. Our task is to make the best research and innovation possible. The Research Council works to foster new ideas, promote ground-breaking research and radical innovation and cultivate a society in which research is created, used and shared, and thus contributes to restructuring and enhanced sustainability.

The Research Council serves as a key research and innovation policy actor nationally and internationally, a strategic investor, a visible and inclusive stakeholder in society and a knowledge-based advisor. These activities lay a foundation for developing dynamic research and innovation communities that can compete successfully in international arenas, generate new insight, contribute to value creation and address the societal challenges facing Norway and the world community. We are at the forefront in developing research of the highest quality and relevance and are the key advisory body to the authorities on research policy issues and carry out tasks commissioned by 15 ministries.

Research is an important tool for Norwegian trade and industry. We have a variety of funding schemes for research-based innovation and knowledge-building. We promote renewal and innovation in the public sector through a number of schemes. Research organisations may apply for funding within all relevant thematic areas and subject fields. We work to encourage increased international cooperation with and participation in EU research and innovation programmes.
