Presentation

Cultural heritage contributes to sustainable development and is fundamental to human well-being. It carries the legacy of our past, gives meaning to our present and can help us build a better future. Yet, it needs care, protection and effective management. Those entrusted with conserving heritage need tools and support to ensure they can do their job to the best of their abilities. That's where ICCROM comes in.

ICCROM is the only organization of its kind with a worldwide mandate to promote and improve the conservation practice of all types of cultural heritage through training, information, research, cooperation and advocacy. We do so through our:

       · Programmes;

       · Research activities;

       · Knowledge resources; and

       · Advisory services.

We collaborate with a broad array of partner institutions from our 137 Member States to carry out these functions, thus strengthening the professional community, fostering knowledge and responding to emerging heritage preservation needs.

Founded by UNESCO in 1956, we are an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Rome, Italy, with a regional office in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, from which we operate at the national, regional and global level. Our headquarters is home to the world’s leading conservation library and a vast collection of records and archives – both of which are freely accessible to the public.

Our organization is small, agile and committed to strengthening our network of partners. Together, we can ensure better outcomes for cultural heritage institutions and professionals through expertise and resources. Want to know more?
